   History at Bosbury

Being a Historian at Bosbury CE Primary School

At Bosbury Primary School, History lessons help our pupils to build a strong understanding of past events, as well as inspiring our children’s curiosity to know more about the past. We foster a reflective knowledge of Britain’s past and its relationship with the history of the wider world. We ask big questions.

As historians, children will develop an awareness of life in the past, past events, and how History has shaped the world we live in. Children ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments and make informed judgements about the past.

History helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives in the past and the process of change. We examine the diversity of different societies and relationships between different groups. Studying History asks children to examine their own identity and the challenges of their time.

- Mrs. K Turnbull (Bosbury CE Primary School History Lead)

The History curriculum at Bosbury is structured around key strands that run through the key stages. The aim is to revisit and build on these strands to help children put their learning into context and foster ‘remembering’ in History. Many of these strands have overlapping elements which help children to make wider links across the subject. Skills in chronology and sources run through all units.

Of course to our children, as well as all of this, History is exciting, inspiring and fun! We build Roman roads on the school field and climb the Malvern Hills to explore Iron Age forts. We dress up and role play different periods in history, we visit Egyptian mummies at museums, spend the day at Anglo Saxon settlements and dig for dinosaurs. Our children make us proud and apply their learning to their futures.

“I want to be a palaeontologist when I grow up, so History has really helped me with this.” - Class 5 pupil
